President's Message

I am busy all of the time.  Even without a nine to five work day, I feel like I am always doing something.  We are headed toward Share-a-Stitch XXX in June and I am busy as heck working on the favors on behalf of our chapter.  Plus, as chairman for SAS XXXI, I seem to have a lot of things to do, but I wish there was a master list somewhere, leading me through the process step-by-step.  I am helping with an ATC demonstration at National Seminar in San Francisco, so I really need to spend some time working on Artist Trading Cards.  All of that excludes the day to day chores and activities that seem to take up more and more of my day with each passing year.

That said I always try to take time for myself.  Not a surprise considering the President’s Challenge I offered this year, but I thought I should reiterate it.  No matter how busy you are, there is always time to take care of yourself.  You can ignore your needs for awhile, but most of the time it comes back to haunt you.  I am slowly getting back into my exercise routine by walking with the dogs and taking yoga classes. I am also continuing to eat well, so I am still maintaining my goal weight.  I even went with my sister and mother for a manicure on my last trip home.  No matter what is going on in my life, I try to carve out a little time for myself, even if sometimes that time is just spent reading or stitching on a favorite project.  I think it helps keep me centered and gives me more time to devote to my volunteer duties, like EGA.

I have been asking all of you to help me with ongoing projects, but trust me; I do not ask any of you to do something that I am not willing to do myself.  “Many hands make small work.” So please do not be offended if I continue to recruit you to help the chapter and the region.

Hope to see some of you in San Francisco!

CyberStitchers part in SAS 30:

"Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves." - Dale Carnegie

Our chapter is responsible for making the favors for Share-a-Stitch 30, which is being sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Region. The exact dates are June 24-27, 2010 and the theme is "Gathering Pearls". SSHHH!!! The favors, handcrafted biscournus, are to be a SURPRISE for seminar attendees, so please check the conversations going on in our Yahoo groups and see what you can do to assist in this effort. We still need a LOT more biscournus. If each of us had made one, we would have had more then enough. Rissa needs the biscournus by May 1, and we are only halfway to the necessary 200. If you are afraid to put them together, just stitch them and Rissa can see that they are put together. Can you make 1 or 2 to help in this effort?

Also being made by our chapter are cakes made from fibers/fabrics to be used as centerpieces. Lynn has made some gorgeous ones. More are needed. Below is a pattern to crochet a cake. It doesn't take too much yarn and works up quickly.

Linking blogs to our website:

Please remember, if you have a blog or website, to include a link to Cyberstitchers on it! It's an easy way to support the chapter. The link to the main page is www.cyberstitchers.org . Also, Meg has been working with Annelle to host our blog on the Cyberstitchers website. Once the kinks are worked out of this, Meg will be once again soliciting people to be highlighted on it. The current link to the blog is www.cyberstitchers.blogspot.com .

Petite Project request:

The Education Department is looking for petite projects. Please pass this on to your members. If anyone has something they would like to submit, let Gwen Nelson know. The guidelines for writing the petite projects can be found on the EGA website. Petite projects in blackwork is especially needed. Thanks!

Chapter Pins:

Cyberstitchers is lucky to have our own Chapter Pin! You can see a picture of what this pin looks like in the files section of this yahoo group. Just go to the file section and look for "cyberstitchers pin". They really are a fun to wear especially when you are attending the National and Regional EGA Seminars.

These pins are $7.00 and that includes the postage regardless of where we are mailing.

If you are interested, you can pay via paypal at www.paypal.com or www.paypal.ca for our Canadian members. The payee is cyberstitchers@excite.com. Just be sure to identify "Chapter Pin" somewhere in the payment information. You can also send a check to me, payable to Cyberstitchers, just email me for my mailing address. Regardless, of how you purchase one, please email me (click on my name below) and give me YOUR mailing address and that you are wanting to purchase a chapter pin. As soon as I see payment, I will get your pin out to you.

Your Chapter Pin volunteer,

Special Interest Groups:

Check out our SIGs - Special Interest Groups. Different stitchers have gotten together for specific interests and stitch-a-longs: Beading, stitching a Christmas ornament each month, each group working on a CC, etc. Go to SIGs on our website to see what is going on.

From the Newsletter Editor:

For our new members, we have built in links to websites mentioned, and to emailing people you may need to contract. If you see a link mentioned and the letters are blue, click on that link and you will be taken there. You will note that I don't put folks' actual emails in the newsletter. If you click on their name in blue, you will be able to email them. If you have a problem, let me know!

I also encourage members to share - if you found a great needlework book, took a great class with a great teacher, have some neat stitching tips to share - let me know so I can include it in the newsletter. Also, if there are some interesting needlework related events in your area, let me know so that I may add them onto the calendar. With the size of our membership, and the area we cover, chances are if there is something happening near you, some of our chapter may be interested in attending.

Education Report

The education committee is composed of Anne Long, Ellen Hartman, and Rissa Peace Root.

BEE 7:

BEE 7 is ready to get rolling! The classes for this year are:

2nd quarter classes:
Plum Blossoms
Roses
Brazilian Purse
Hummingbird & Honeysuckle

3rd quarter classes:
Dresden Garden
Cleopatra's Cat
Shading Stitches
Circle with Blue Flowers

4th quarter classes:
Silk Ribbon Garden
Ikebana
Molly

Anne looked at National's schedule and worked around it so we're not registering the same classes during the same time period. If you voted for one of these classes in the BEE poll, you are automatically assigned a spot in the class. If your class did not get selected, please email me offlist with your class choice and Anne will add you to it. Payment notices have gone out for the 2nd quarter classes.

Although you are limited to 1 BEE class each year, you can sign up for more classes as what is called a "full tuition" student. This means you pay for postage and your share of the course fee. If you know of EGA members from other chapters, they are welcome to join any of our classes but are NOT eligible for the BEE benefit; they are full tuition only. If you are a repeat student in any of these classes, please let Anne know so her records are correct when we register the class - if you're a repeat student, she will assume you already have the textbook.... Anne is always looking for class coordinators, so if you are interested, please let her know!

If you have any class requests, please email Anne offlist. :-)

Don't forget, there are CC's available to us inexpensively via Needle Arts magazine or online at the EGA website. The Needle Arts quarterly offerings are The Handy Huswif with Cathy Trostmann and Tiramisu by Dakota Rogers. Registration for these is open until May, 31, 2010. Send one check in the amount of $55 for The Handy Huswif, and/or $60 for Tiramisu, made payable to EGA. Mail to EGA, 1355 Bardstown Road, Suite 157, Louisville, KY 40204. This includes text, teaching fee, shipping, and administrative expenses. Online registration with a credit card is also available on the Group Courses (GCC) page of the EGA website. Online classes are available to all individual members for registration at the special $20 fee plus text, via the EGA website: www.egausa.org or by mail to EGA, 1355
Bardstown Road, Suite 157, Louisville, KY 40204. Courses are not conducted online. For March - April the courses are Circle with Blue Flower with Margaret Kinsey and Dutch Legacy with Sandy Rogers. May - June will be Cleopatra's Cat with Mary Longand and Molly: A Dimensional Bear with Dianne Lewandowski.

Petite Project:

The present petite project is called "Dimensional (Brazilian) Embroidered Heart" by Grace W. Gillen.

BAM:

BAM is Bead-a-Month and grew out of a SAM, Stitch-a-Month, program we purchased for several years. Our own Rissa picked up with BAM when SAM ran out of new files. All diagrams are maintained in the CS-Stitch-A-Month yahoogroup. Look in the Files section in the Folder labeled "Files for BAM". If you are not a member of the CS-Stitch-A-Month group but would like to be, send an email to:

CS-Stitch-a-Month-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Stitch-a-long:

We have a few stitch-a-long groups going now such as the ornament group, and a bead group. Please let Anne know if there is an interest in a group stitchalong, a small meeting stitchalong, or any other similar ideas you might have. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email.

Outreach Projects

Ornaments for Breast Cancer

The 2009 Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research at the Attic Needlework shop in Mesa, Arizona (www.atticneedlework.com) was another smashing success. The Attic reports a final tally $20,022 raised for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, beating last year's total of $15,040.50 ! If you go to the Attic's site you can see photos of all the donated work, including Abigail Colby's Work Basket and accessories. As I understand it, Abigail was unable to finish this set, so the Mayflower Sampler Guild did.

Time after the holidays to start thinking about next year! Thanks to all those who participated in the 2009 auction. Let's have a really big turnout in 2010.

Star Pillows

There are still troops deploying around world so if you are interested in stitching a pillow, please use the cross stitch pattern provided by the chapter in our files. You will be stitching a small design on a 6x6 inch square of 14ct. white Aida and then mail it to our Chapter Project Coordinator. The stitched squares will then be assembled into small pillows with similarly-themed backing fabrics. A pillow is given to a soldier before shipping out to kiss the pillow and give it to his or her child as a keepsake that will hopefully comfort the child during the separation from their parent.

The pattern may be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberstitchers_ega/files/KISSING%20PILLOWS%20pattern/ as a PDF document (or, go into the Files section in this group, and click on the folder Kissing Pillows Pattern); if you need technical assistance, please contact Lynn via e-mail. This is a simple and quick stitch.

Meg is our Project Coordinator for the Kissing Pillows Chapter Project. She is the chapter member you will mail your stitched design to, and she will be sure that the squares are assembled into mini-pillows and sent on to their final distribution point. Contact Meg via email for her mailing address. We hope that many chapter members will find this project to their liking and that Meg will receive many stitched squares!

Just a few items to bring to your attention:
(1) You will notice a copyright on the chart of the designer Geraldine Trappey, an active member of EGA's Yellow Rose Chapter in Houston, Texas. Please note that we have acquired Geraldine's permission to use her charted design for a specific purpose. If another EGA chapter or other group would like to also participate in this project, we ask that they first contact Geraldine Trappey to acquire permission; send an e-mail to me for Geraldine's contact information.

(2) This project is to benefit children whose parents cannot be with them. It is designed to give comfort and solace to children who have no choice in their parent's employment. It neither supports nor decries the current situational operations of the armed forces, but rather supports the people most impacted by those operations.

Yes there is a Canadian version of this project for Canadian service folks. Lynne D., one of our Canadian members is coordinating this in her f2f chapter in Ontario. Contact Lynne D. by email to get the pattern and information for the Canadian version of this project.

Bookmarks For Literacy

From the TVR: the 2010 Outreach (national): Stitching for Literacy Bookmark Challenge.

A few comments/questions:
1. Well, we (chapter) already do this. Judi Held collects any bookmarks that our members stitch and gives them to her local library's children's reading program. I'm not sure that members are stitching bookmarks "like a house afire", but it's still an
active project for us.

2. A deadline of May 6th?! And we just found out about it?! National is attempting to coordinate the project with Children's Book Week. But, could we participate at any time of the year for "EGA National credit"?

3. Iin our yahoo group(s) there are two free charts for bookmarks which were provided by national.

Meanwhile, our own outreach through Judi is:

- make a bookmark (or more than one, if you wish), in any technique.
- send an e-mail to Judi to ask for her shipping address.
- send your bookmark to Judi.
- Judi will send/deliver the members' bookmarks to a literacy organization on behalf of the chapter.

Outreach for One

Our "Outreach for One" folder is still there to provide members with other ideas for outreach. Go to our cyberstitchers_ega Yahoo! group. Click on "Links", then on "Outreach for One" folder. Maintenance of this list now rests with the chapter members. We encourage members to post other links to charities you know of that need assistance, or you can send the information to our Outreach Chair, Lynn, and the committee will see that it gets posted.

The committee always welcomes any ideas for chapter projects (either from the membership or the committee). As usual, it's a bit difficult to find something a chapter like ours can do. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted, and will be fully investigated by the committee. Please share your ideas with our Outreach Chair, Lynn.

Make a Cake:

Chocolate cake

I used to crochet a lot, and I bought a LOT of patterns from Annie's Attic. Annie Potter designed all kinds of things from afghans, to doll clothes, to stuffed animals. A long time ago I remember making a bunch of crocheted food, so when it was time to make a cake out of fabric or fiber, I set out to make a pattern for that. For the life I me I could not recall how to crochet an Irish Crochet Rose, so I dug out an afghan that Annie made roses for, and tried one. I took her idea and reengineered it a bit, but I wish to thank her for getting me going again - she gave me a lot of awesome patterns to work up over the years and I learned a lot about crocheting from her.

Materials:
I used Vanna's Choice knitting worsted by Lion Brand Yarns, but any worsted weight yarn is fine.
7oz.Chocolate (chocolate brown)
3 oz. Little Boy Blue (light blue or whatever color rose you wish)
1 oz. Sweet Pea (medium green)
Fiberfill stuffing, 2 10" cardboard circles (I used Wilton cake circles used for making cakes). The circles are optional.

With an H hook my gauge was 4 sc. = 1", 4 rows sc = 1"

Top and sides:
120 stitches last round
Row 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd st (6sc).
Row 2: Sc in next st, 2sc in next st around (12 sc)
Row 3: Sc in 2 st, 2sc in next st around (18 sc)
Rows 4-20: Continue to increase 6 st evenly spaced around (120 st)
Row 21: Sc in the BACK LOOP of each sc around.
Rows 22-40: Sc in each st around. End off.

Bottom: Repeat Row 1-20. End off.

Top edging:
In front loops with light blue sl st, sk 1 st, 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st , sl st in next st, sk 1 st around.

Small rose  (make 2):
Ch 3, 8 hdc in 1st st.  Join w/sl st to 1st st.
Sc in each st around.,
(Sk 1st st, in next st sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl st).  Repeat around.  4petals
Ch 1, sc in skipped stitch of previous row.  Ch 3, sc in next skipped st, around
In each loop, sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl.  4 petals, End off.

Big rose ( make 3)  :
Ch 3, 10 hdc in 1st st.  Join w/sl st to 1st st.
Sc in each st around.,
(Sk 1st st, in next st sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl st).  Repeat around.  5 petals
Ch 1, sc in skipped stitch of previous row.  Ch 3, sc in next skipped st, around
In each loop, sl st, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sl.  5 petals.  End off.

Leaves (make 7)
Ch 9.
In 3rd chain from hook, make 2 dc.
Make 2 dc in each of next two ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next, sl st in next, ch 1, sl st again in last ch.
Working down the other side in the remaining loops, sc, hdc, hdc, 2dc, 2dc, 2dc, sl st to top of starting Ch 3.

Sew the roses and leaves onto the cake top. You can refer to the photo for placement.

Top view

Bottom edging and finishing:
This also joins bottom to cake – repeat top edging going through loops of both pieces. Crochet 3/4 of the way around, then stuff the cake, before closing with the rest of the edging.

Note: I put one 10" cardboard cake circle up right under the cake top, then stuffed the cake with fiberfill. I added one more cardboard circle as the bottom. This is up to you. I thought I needed the two circles to keep the cake top flat and as support on the bottom.

If you have ANY question, please email me!
