Mouse TalesVol 8 - Issue 4 December 2009Contents
President's MessageIt is hard to believe that another year has come and gone! When I was young, my mother warned me that time passed faster as you aged and I thought she was crazy. I mean, time is a constant, right? It took me a long time to realize she meant it was my perception of time that would change and it has. Time seems to move incredibly quickly these days, especially when I so many commitments and obligations. I am sure it is the same for most of you. Speaking of time, we need to supply a stitched chapter logo for the new TVR Banner as soon as possible. As I mentioned in previous meetings, the TVR Banner Committee has directed each chapter to submit a stitched logo for the new banner. The committee details and size restrictions are in a PDF document the files section. (http://tinyurl.com/y9px79y) As of the last TVR Board Meeting, two chapters have already submitted their patches! The CyberStitchers board decided we should turn this into a President's Challenge and ask members to stitch the chapter logo, then we will vote on which will be included on the banner. I wish each of you a happy and healthy New Year!
Chapter and National NewsBudget and Elections: The slate of officers, as presented, has been elected for the 2010-11 term. Please welcome our Cyberstitchers Officers: President: Rissa Peace Root The 2010 budget was also passed. You can find it in the Member's Only section. We're very proud to announce that our own Rissa Root is the new EGA Education Chair. Congratulations Rissa! Dues: The national EGA has changed the way our dues are collected. Instead of being due on your anniversary date, all members' dues are payable by May 31st. 2009 our dues were all prorated to set this up, so that should be it. All dues will be due May 31, 2010. SAS 2010: "Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves." - Dale Carnegie Our chapter is responsible for making the favors for Share-a-Stitch 30, which is being sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Region and will be held in Charleston, West Virginia. The exact dates are June 24-27, 2010 and the theme is "Gathering Pearls". SSHHH!!! The favors, handcrafted biscournus, are to be a SURPRISE for seminar attendees, so please check the conversations going on in our Yahoo groups and see what you can do to assist in this effort. We are going to need a LOT of biscournus, so let's all work together on this! From the Newsletter Editor: For our new members, we have built in links to websites mentioned, and to emailing people you may need to contract. If you see a link mentioned and the letters are blue, click on that link and you will be taken there. You will note that I don't put folks' actual emails in the newsletter. If you click on their name in blue, you will be able to email them. If you have a problem, let me know! I also encourage members to share - if you found a great needlework book, took a great class with a great teacher, have some neat stitching tips to share - let me know so I can include it in the newsletter. Also, if there are some interesting needlework related events in your area, let me know so that I may add them onto the calendar. With the size of our membership, and the area we cover, chances are if there is something happening near you, some of our chapter may be interested in attending. Education ReportThe education committee is composed of Anne Long, Ellen Hartman, and Rissa Peace Root. BEE 6: We are about finished with BEE 6. For our new members, BEE means "Big Education Event". For the past 6 years, CyberStitchers has been offering each member the opportunity to take 1 CC for the cost of the text book only. The chapter picks up the course/teacher fee and the postage costs for the class. EGA limits a class group to 21 students. Stay tuned for info on BEE 7. Please note when thinking on what CCs you might wish to take in 2010
that a number of CCs are retiring this year: Don't forget, there are CC's available to us inexpensively via Needle Arts magazine or online at the EGA website. Petite Project: The present petite project is called "Sampler Bookmark" by Barbara L. Rakosnik of Periwinkle Promises. Tthe latest piece in our Petite Projects file can always be found at this URL: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CSPetiteProjects/files/Current%20Petite%20Project/ BAM: BAM is Bead-a-Month and grew out of a SAM, Stitch-a-Month, program we purchased for several years. Our own Rissa picked up with BAM when SAM ran out of new files. All diagrams are maintained in the CS-Stitch-A-Month yahoogroup. Look in the Files section in the Folder labeled "Files for BAM". If you are not a member of the CS-Stitch-A-Month group but would like to be, send an email to: CS-Stitch-a-Month-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Stitch-a-long: We have a few stitch-a-long groups going now such as the ornament group, and a bead group. Please let Anne know if there is an interest in a group stitchalong, a small meeting stitchalong, or any other similar ideas you might have. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email. Outreach ProjectsOrnaments for Breast Cancer The 2009 Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research at the Attic Needlework shop in Mesa, Arizona (www.atticneedlework.com) was another smashing success. The Attic reports a final tally $20,022 raised for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, beating last year's total of $15,040.50 ! If you go to the Attic's site you can see photos of all the donated work, including Abigail Colby's Work Basket and accessories. As I understand it, Abigail was unable to finish this set, so the Mayflower Sampler Guild did. Time after the holidays to start thinking about next year! Thanks to all those who participated in the 2009 auction. Let's have a really big turnout in 2010. Star Pillows There are still troops deploying around world so if you are interested in stitching a pillow, please use the cross stitch pattern provided by the chapter in our files. You will be stitching a small design on a 6x6 inch square of 14ct. white Aida and then mail it to our Chapter Project Coordinator. The stitched squares will then be assembled into small pillows with similarly-themed backing fabrics. A pillow is given to a soldier before shipping out to kiss the pillow and give it to his or her child as a keepsake that will hopefully comfort the child during the separation from their parent. The pattern may be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberstitchers_ega/files/KISSING%20PILLOWS%20pattern/ as a PDF document (or, go into the Files section in this group, and click on the folder Kissing Pillows Pattern); if you need technical assistance, please contact Lynn via e-mail. This is a simple and quick stitch. Meg is our Project Coordinator for the Kissing Pillows Chapter Project. She is the chapter member you will mail your stitched design to, and she will be sure that the squares are assembled into mini-pillows and sent on to their final distribution point. Contact Meg via email for her mailing address. We hope that many chapter members will find this project to their liking and that Meg will receive many stitched squares! Just a few items to bring to your attention: Yes there is a Canadian version of this project for Canadian service folks. Lynne D., one of our Canadian members is coordinating this in her f2f chapter in Ontario. Contact Lynne D. by email to get the pattern and information for the Canadian version of this project. Bookmarks For Literacy Judi continues to accept handmade bookmarks for the chapter's Bookmarks
for Literacy project. The requirements are as follows: Outreach for One Our "Outreach for One" folder is still there to provide members with other ideas for outreach. Go to our cyberstitchers_ega Yahoo! group. Click on "Links", then on "Outreach for One" folder. Maintenance of this list now rests with the chapter members. We encourage members to post other links to charities you know of that need assistance, or you can send the information to our Outreach Chair, Lynn, and the committee will see that it gets posted. The committee always welcomes any ideas for chapter projects (either from the membership or the committee). As usual, it's a bit difficult to find something a chapter like ours can do. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted, and will be fully investigated by the committee. Please share your ideas with our Outreach Chair, Lynn. Of InterestEGA HQ Move: Once more, in a letter dated August 28, 2009, the EGA president Carol Peao Dam writes: Due to severe maintenance issues, EGA headquarters, 426 W. Jefferson St., Louisville, KY will be closed to the public and visitors until further notice. We regret any inconvenience that this may cause for our members who planned to visit. The staff will continue with regular hours to meet members needs either through phone or email contact. With the help of staff and volunteers, the collection is safe, the basement has been cleaned and emptied as best we can, the library is packed, and we are doing what we can to prepare for whatever comes our way. We hope to move to a new, smaller location as soon as we come to an agreement with our landlord. Updates will be posted as we progress.
Please note that this situation is not related to EGA budget issues which have been with us for many years. EGA fully intends to fulfill our lease obligations until 2013 as required assuming that the maintenance issues are addressed or we will move to another location. It had been planned that our next location would be to a smaller space in 2013 anyway, but life, rain, and a cranky HVAC system combined to bring the situation to a head sooner than expected. It's been a difficult summer, but with your patience and support, EGA will pull through it. If you have any questions, please contact Carol Dam. Sincerely, Plimouth Jacket I have kept you up to date on developments with the Plimouth Plantation Jacket that was created at the Plimouth Plantation in Plymouth Massachusetts. The jacket, named "Faith" because of the faith everyone had that this project could be realized, and the faith required to see it through to completion, is now complete. It is an absolutely incredible achievement - completely handcrafted from the gorgeous stitching and handwoven lining to the handcrafted spangles and handwoven lace. I received an invitation to come to Plimouth for the Reveal on December 10. Sadly, it was a 3 1/2 hour drive each way on a school night. However, you can see a quick bit of the proceedings on You Tube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWOuTyEcV8s. if this link doesn't work, just search on 'plimouth jacket'. There are two clips, but one is a bit darkly lit. As anticipated, plans are set to have "Faith" displayed at the Winterthur Museum and Country Estate in Winterthur, Delaware. "She" will be on display in the museum's Textile and Needlework Gallery this winter before being part of a special exhibit in 2009-10. To see the story behind the jacket, follow Tricia's blog at www.thistle-threads.com/blog. You can also find information about the Winterthur exhibit at: http://www.winterthur.org/contribute/needlework_jacket.asp?sub=needlework_jacket . Note: I had occasional trouble with this link. If it is cranky, you can just go to www.winterthur.org and follow the links to Contribute on the top right, then and to Needlework Jacket on the lower left.
