President's Message

I have a lot on my mind. CyberStitchers is in the middle of creating favors and table decorations for Share-A-Stitch XXX in Charleston, WV. It is a lot of work, but I am enjoying all of the stitching. At seminar in Nashville, I volunteered to chair SAS XXXI and the work has already begun. Plus, we are launching a new President's Challenge to find a chapter patch for the newly redesigned TVR Banner.

As I write this, we are just two weeks away from National Seminar in Pittsburgh. I am so excited that I have already packed. I am taking three classes and they all asked for a variety of threads and fibers...so my basic kit turned into a quilting tote, which then turned into a piece of rolling luggage. I am sure most of you can sympathize with my plight. Even though I loathe the idea of having to check my "kit" as baggage, ultimately, it will be easier to lug around with me at seminar and I don't have to worry about what I left behind.

I really look forward to the coming weeks, months and years! I hope to see some of you at national. Remember to look for the CyberStitchers folded tent card on a table in the lunch area on the first day of seminar. After the first day, we tend to move around and explore our options for meals. It is much easier to meet up at regional seminar, so we would love it if you could attend SAS 30 in Charleston (WV) or SAS 31 in Birmingham (AL). Especially since our chapter is so involved in both events!

Chapter and National News

In the CS Newsletter:

I want to thank Karen W for all the hard work she has done these past few years as our membership chair. It is not easy keep track when there is almost 300 of us. Thank you Karen! And thank you to Kelly J for stepping up to take up the reins. Bravo Ladies! The new mailing address for snail mailing any membership things that need to go to the chapter is:
CyberStitchers
P.O. Box 3972
Edmond, OK 73083-3972
This is effective immediately, so the information needs to be changed on our website, and on any documents that our members use! :-)

For our new members, we have built in links to websites mentioned, and to emailing people you may need to contract. If you see a link mentioned and the letters are blue, click on that link and you will be taken there. You will note that I don't put folks' actual emails in the newsletter. If you click on their name in blue, you will be able to email them. If you have a problem, let me know!

I also encourage members to share - if you found a great needlework book, took a great class with a great teacher, have some neat stitching tips to share - let me know so I can include it in the newsletter. Also, if there are some interesting needlework related events in your area, let me know so that I may add them onto the calendar. With the size of our membership, and the area we cover, chances are if there is something happening near you, some of our chapter may be interested in attending.

The favors are to be a surprise for seminar attendees, so please check the conversations going on in our Yahoo groups and see what you can do to assist in this effort. Let's all work together on this!

Education Report

The education committee is composed of Anne Long, Ellen Hartman, and Rissa Peace Root.

BEE 6:

We are about finished with BEE 6. For our new members, BEE means "Big Education Event". For the past 6 years, CyberStitchers has been offering each member the opportunity to take 1 GCC for the cost of the text book only. The chapter picks up the course/teacher fee and the postage costs for the class. EGA limits a class group to 21 students.

3rd quarter classes are already underway. Here is the list of remaining CC projects selected for this year, and which quarter registration will take place for that class:

4th quarter 2009:
A Memory Book
Handy Huswif
Japanese Temari Balls

A number of CCs are retiring this year:
The Needle is my Immortality
Mariposa
Crazy Patch Adventure
Flaming Jewels
To the Acorn
Fantasy Remembered
Sampling Needlepoint
Plum Blossoms

Anne is taking names for these classes to see if there is enough interest to register them one more time. The total cost of the class will vary depending upon the number of students in it - so the more students we have in the class (up to 21 students total), the cheaper it is per person! Right now the most popular retiring CCs are Plum Blossoms and Fantasy Remembered, but we still need many more people in each class before we can definitely say we're registering the class. These classes are open to any current EGA member.

Don't forget, there are CC's available to us inexpensively via Needle Arts magazine or online at the EGA website.

Petite Project:

The present petite project is called "SwedishWeaving" by Diane Brosten.

Stitch-a-long:

We have a few stitch-a-long groups going now such as the ornament group, and a bead group. Please let Anne know if there is an interest in a group stitchalong, a small meeting stitchalong, or any other similar ideas you might have. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email.

Dragonboats Class:

The Dragonboats class is still up and running on yahoogroups. People still continue to join - especially some of our new members. If you are interested in making one of these cute little ornaments, the class is free for all members. Go to yahoogroups.com and sign up for CSDragonboats, or email Sue for an invitation.

Outreach Projects

Ornaments for Breast Cancer

The 11th Annual Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research at the Attic Needlework shop in Mesa, Arizona was a big success last year. $15,040.50 was raised and sent to the Breast Cancer Research Center in NY!!

OK, ladies, the challenge is out there. Alice, who was mentioned by The Attic, turned in over 50 ornaments last year! She works at another LNS, she teaches programs for Karen's local Face-to-Face chapter, and also teaches weekly at another LNS so she is not a lady of leisure who does nothing but stitch ornaments for this cause.

We are a group of almost 300 members. Can we not do at least what she did???? How about meeting this challenge and stitching as many ornaments from this group this year's 12th Annual Silent Auction as Alice did last year.

Ornaments need to reach Karen by November 17, 2009. If you take a picture, please email it to Karen; that saves her doing this as she wants to make sure pictures of all the ornaments are posted before the auction. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Karen and also email her to ask for her mailing address when you are ready to send yours.

Thanks to all those who participated last year and let's have a really big turnout this year.

Star Pillows

There are still troops deploying around world so if you are interested in stitching a pillow, please use the cross stitch pattern provided by the chapter in our files. You will be stitching a small design on a 6x6 inch square of 14ct. white Aida and then mail it to our Chapter Project Coordinator. The stitched squares will then be assembled into small pillows with similarly-themed backing fabrics. A pillow is given to a soldier before shipping out to kiss the pillow and give it to his or her child as a keepsake that will hopefully comfort the child during the separation from their parent.

Posted on ANG List by egangcorre:

Thanks again to the kissing pillow stitchers. I just received a certificate from Rick's Battalion, addressed to our local chapter, but meant for all of you who helped. Please copy this and read to your chapter members, too. We sent them 1775 pillows in late August.

Rock of the Marne Battalion
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION
This certificate is awarded to
Embroiderers' Guild of America
American Needlepoint Guild

Presented for outstanding service and invaluable contributions to the Soldiers and Families of 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment. Your willingness and dedication to volunteer made the families of the "Rock" Battalion stronger as they deploy to Iraq. Your energy and selfless service are an inspiration to all and reflection great credit upon you, Team Lewis, and the United States Army.

(Signed)
CMS Samuel G. Murphy LTC John Leffers
Battalion Command Sergeant Major Battalion Commander

When Pat Correz asked everyone to donate kissing pillows, EGA and ANG members rallied to the cause, and the certificate and letter show how much they have meant to our soldiers.

The pattern may be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cyberstitchers_ega/files/KISSING%20PILLOWS%20pattern/ as a PDF document (or, go into the Files section in this group, and click on the folder Kissing Pillows Pattern); if you need technical assistance, please contact Lynn via e-mail. This is a simple and quick stitch.

Meg is our Project Coordinator for the Kissing Pillows Chapter Project. She is the chapter member you will mail your stitched design to, and she will be sure that the squares are assembled into mini-pillows and sent on to their final distribution point. Contact Meg via email for her mailing address. We hope that many chapter members will find this project to their liking and that Meg will receive many stitched squares!

Just a few items to bring to your attention:
(1) You will notice a copyright on the chart of the designer Geraldine Trappey, an active member of EGA's Yellow Rose Chapter in Houston, Texas. Please note that we have acquired Geraldine's permission to use her charted design for a specific purpose. If another EGA chapter or other group would like to also participate in this project, we ask that they first contact Geraldine Trappey to acquire permission; send an e-mail to me for Geraldine's contact information.

(2) This project is to benefit children whose parents cannot be with them. It is designed to give comfort and solace to children who have no choice in their parent's employment. It neither supports nor decries the current situational operations of the armed forces, but rather supports the people most impacted by those operations.

Yes there is a Canadian version of this project for Canadian service folks. Lynne D., one of our Canadian members is coordinating this in her f2f chapter in Ontario. Contact Lynne D. by email to get the pattern and information for the Canadian version of this project.

Bookmarks For Literacy

Judi continues to accept handmade bookmarks for the chapter's Bookmarks for Literacy project. The requirements are as follows:

- make a bookmark (or more than one, if you wish), in any technique.
- send an e-mail to Judi to ask for her shipping address.
- send your bookmark to Judi.
- Judi will send/deliver the members' bookmarks to a literacy organization on behalf of the chapter.

Outreach for One

Our "Outreach for One" folder is still there to provide members with other ideas for outreach. Go to our cyberstitchers_ega Yahoo! group. Click on "Links", then on "Outreach for One" folder. Maintenance of this list now rests with the chapter members. We encourage members to post other links to charities you know of that need assistance, or you can send the information to our Outreach Chair, Lynn, and the committee will see that it gets posted.

The committee always welcomes any ideas for chapter projects (either from the membership or the committee). As usual, it's a bit difficult to find something a chapter like ours can do. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted, and will be fully investigated by the committee. Please share your ideas with our Outreach Chair, Lynn.

Of Interest

EGA HQ Move:

In a letger dated August 28, 2009, the EGA president Carol Peao Dam writes:

Due to severe maintenance issues, EGA headquarters, 426 W. Jefferson St., Louisville, KY will be closed to the public and visitors until further notice. We regret any inconvenience that this may cause for our members who planned to visit. The staff will continue with regular hours to meet members needs either through phone or email contact. With the help of staff and volunteers, the collection is safe, the basement has been cleaned and emptied as best we can, the library is packed, and we are doing what we can to prepare for whatever comes our way. We hope to move to a new, smaller location as soon as we come to an agreement with our landlord. Updates will be posted as we progress.

Please note that this situation is not related to EGA budget issues which have been with us for many years. EGA fully intends to fulfill our lease obligations until 2013 as required assuming that the maintenance issues are addressed or we will move to another location. It had been planned that our next location would be to a smaller space in 2013 anyway, but life, rain, and a cranky HVAC system combined to bring the situation to a head sooner than expected. It's been a difficult summer, but with your patience and support, EGA will pull through it. If you have any questions, please contact Carol Dam.

Sincerely,
Carol Peao Dam
President
The Embroiderers' Guild of America

Mary Wigham Sampler

Many people already know about this, but a historical sampler has been made available free on the internet by the Ackworth School in England. Apparently, there was some kind of copyright problem (not sure exactly what) and so the sampler is available to the public free. You can make a donation if you wish. Current donations made up of small contributions from stitchers all over the world total 4,300£.

http://needleprint.blogspot.com/2009/05/free-mary-wigham-stitchalong.html

If you go to this page and go down on the right you'll see the link to the download place. Also, another interesting thing is the international blog which has a flag for each language/country where stitchers doing this sampler are adding comments about their works in progress.

A Treasury of Needleart, with lecture by Tanja Berlin

Houston Embroiderers' Guild presents A Treasury of Needleart. October 25, 2009, 2 P.M. at the Houston Baptist University, 7502 Fondren Road, Museum of American Architecture and Decorative Arts. The exhibit will open with a lecture by Tanja Berlin, nationally known needlework teachers. A reception will be held following the lecture. The exhibit will be on display from October 25 - November 19, 2009 during museum hours. For more information contact Marian Hoffman at Marian Hoffman or 281-565-0672.

Plimouth Jacket

In the July 2008 issue of Mouse Tales I wrote about the Plimouth Plantation Jacket being created in Plymouth Massachusetts. The jacket becamse seomthing of a victim of the economy. Even as the jacket was nearing completion, funding was cut at Plimouth Plantation. Among the cuts was the planned exhibition that was to include the jacket, and a number a staff folks. So what to do with this nearly complete needlework treasury?

Dr. Tricia Wilson Nguyen, of Thistle Threads, who has been a consultant and heavily involved in the jacket, took on the task of keeping the jacket on track. The jacket was moved to Thistle Threads and is nearly complete. Plans include having it on display at Winterthur, then have it appropriatley stored in Boston after it has been on display for a few years. Such a treasure could not be left to fall by the wayside! To follow the rest of the jacket making process, and to learn where it is headed, follow Tricia's blog at www.thistle-threads.com/blog.

Gilt Sylke Twist:

One thing that the Plimouth Jacket has already accomplished is to shine a light on some of the metals historically used in needlework. Some were mot' really available in the modern world, like Gilt Sylke Twist. I was fascinated reading about it in the jacket blogs and how Access Commodities of Great Britain came aboard to make it for the jacket. Of course, that led to it becoming commercially available. This year Nan Caldera of Just Nan used it in her "Sirens of the Sea" design. It is not that widely available, but if you shop the 'Net you can find anything. It is a bit dear -$22 - $25 for a 35 m spool, but for someone looking for something different to try outside the everyday, it is a neat "fiber".

GST is a flat filament silk, Au Ver A Soie's Soie Ovale, is twisted together with actual wire; gilt wire is 1/2% gold on a silver plated copper core. The result of this twist is a strong yet flexible "fiber". Looking at it, you see a rich color, and then see the sheen from the gilt wire as the light hits it. In reading Tricia's blog, I did see comments about not pulling too hard on the twist as it might cause breaks in the wire. She also comments that it rubs a bit - to be expected with the wire.

Originally Access Commodities was releasing 8 colors, but there are now 14: Azure - a rich blue aqua, Bisse - an ivory, Isabella - a yellowy tan like chamois, Redde (spelling is two d's), Skarlet - bit of orange red, Carnacion - a pale pink, Incarcadine - a more peachy pale pink, Green - an olivy looking light green, Lincolne Grene (spelling is grene) - a medium grass green, Purple, Graie Blewe - think a light 414 or 415 in DMC floss, Indico Blewe - the darker of the 414-415s color family, Sable - a brown, and Black. I am looking forward to using the color Azure, a blue aqua color, on Just Nan's piece.

If anyone knows of other events that should be included here. Please let me know. We cover a wide-spread geographic area, and with summer vacation, people will also be traveling, and may want to check out other things that I have missed. Please put CS in the subject line. - Sue
